Preserving and understanding your heirlooms

Nothing lasts forever, and that is particularly true of older items. Time takes its toll on almost everything, whether it be made of wood, paper, textile, glass, or metal. Therefore, it is very important that an individual understands what he or she owns so that the items can be properly looked after.

A great starting point for this process is an evaluation, which makes careful note of the item, its condition, and potential need for preservation. Also, taking clear and detailed photographs of your heirlooms is important, not only to properly document what you have, but to monitor any condition problems that may arise over time.  Another important consideration might be the need for a certified appraisal by an appraiser who is qualified to document items within a particular, specialized field. Consider Heritage Preservation Resources your first stop to assist you for all of your antique and heirloom needs. Consulting sessions are available at a very modest rate.

Preservation is recommended for all items of value, especially aged or delicate items. Preservation is not the same as restoration, which involves altering a physical object for the sake of attempting to bring it back to a more "original" condition. The act of preserving an object concerns stabilizing something to keep it in its present condition for as long as possible. Some common techniques for preserving three dimensional objects involve special protective cases, or in the case of historic garments, acid-free boxes which also protect from light and insects. The physical packing of these items is very important, as well, for, in the case of textile items, improper packing and folding can lead to stresses on weak areas of fabric or seams. Lesser-quality storage items made of plastics or some metals may interact with the items themselves and, inadvertently, lead to yellowing or further physical damage.
